Hello my dreadfuls,
The Nightcomers began with Ethan seeing Vanessa’s finger painting blood scorpion.
He asked her what it was.
She stared off into the distance and began the flashback.
So she was standing outside of some lady’s home and she couldn’t get any closer because of the blood drawing on the stone. And after waiting night and day, finally the woman decided to meet her.
Maybe it was her way of making sure that Vanessa meant business? We don’t know. She bit her own thumb and painted a cross on Vanessa’s forehead, asking Vanessa if she needed help with whatever the other girls around the town needed help with: boy problems, unwanted babies etc, which caused them to give the old lady the name “Cut-Wife”.
Vanessa’s boy problem was of a different kind though. Hers wanted to bring hell on earth with her by his side. (What a catch, am I right?)
She told the Cut-Wife she needed her help with… being damned.
After a brief talk Cut-Wife tested Vanessa witch skills.
What a surprise. It was the Devil.
In the meantime someone was up to some manipulation.
Cut-Wife and Vanessa continued their lessons in the forest, as they picked herbs and cute, fluffy animals for dinner.
And this is also when they had this meaningful dialogue:
The Cut-Wife: They send their girls to me, but for this very service they despise me. So it is always for those who do for women. Old as I am, I know nothing. Why people in this world hate what is not them Why they fear all they don’t know. Why they hate themselves most of all- for being weak, for being old, for being everything altogether that is not godlike. Which of us can be that?
The Cut-Wife: Monsters all, are we not?
Vanessa: Some perhaps more than others.
The Cut-Wife: Is that what you feel?
Vanessa: Yes.
The Cut-Wife: Then it will be true, as long as you feel it so.
That night, they had visitors.
The witches wanted Vanessa and Evelyn used her super gay powers to bring Cut-Wife to her side.
Thankfully Vanessa stopped her in time.
Later this dudebro (the one Evelyn was manipulating who also owned most of the land) tried to molest Vanessa because… he was a dudebro.
Vanessa turned the tables on him.
You don’t mess with Vanessa, you bastard.
Later the same dudebro dudebroed with other dudebros, making them think if they didn’t kill the Cut-Wife, life as they knew it would end.
So before she was taken by the mob to be burned, Cut-Wife told Vanessa her name was Joan Clayton.
Oh and she also said, “When Lucifer fell, he did not fall alone. They will hunt you until the end of days. Be true.”
As Joan was carried off to be burned, Vanessa watched in tears and could do nothing.
Joan seemed to embrace death because she was already dying and honestly she didn’t look like she was having a great time before Vanessa showed up. All the same, with the tragically beautiful music Penny Dreadful likes to stab our hearts with, we shed tears at her unjust murder.
Then of course, the Dudebro striked again.
And they branded our dear, precious Vanessa because that was whatever their religious weirdness required.
(Victor: Gotta love religion.)

Later the witches wanted Vanessa to just come out to play.
Joan left the house to Vanessa because f the system.
Vanessa looked at the book Joan had warned her about, the one she said to use only when Vanessa had no other choice because it would cost her.
As Vanessa walked out of her new house, she seemed much more confident, as if she was fully equipped to handle whatever she had to face.
Maybe because she had a new hobby? (Can’t she just slightly prick her finger, does she have to cut it so much every time? Poor thumb.)
Off you go, little scorpion. We’ve got your back.
